Effective communication with clients who have limited English proficiency is not just a courtesy—it’s a legal and ethical obligation. This CLE course, led by bilingual attorney and translation expert Liliana E. Ward, provides attorneys with essential tools to navigate language barriers in legal practice.
Attendees will gain a practical understanding of when and how to work with translators and interpreters, the differences between various interpretation modes (simultaneous, consecutive, sight), and how to select appropriately credentialed language professionals. The course also explores federal and state requirements for language access, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, recent Executive Orders, and applicable ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct.
Through real-world scenarios and interactive guidance, participants will learn to avoid common pitfalls such as mistranslations, ethical breaches, and cultural misunderstandings that can impact case outcomes.
